From the manse . . .
I have to admit that I need a daily dose of news from around the world. Sad I know, and I need to get out more, but there you are. It's out, it's public and I feel better now that you all know. I try to read the newspaper at the weekend, and watch and listen to the news during the day but most of the news tends to be ‘gloom and doom’. To find anything different you have to read the paper thoroughly or roam the Internet, particularly the BBC news website.
I'm aware that not everyone has Internet access, but in amongst news about floods in Burma, and their government's attitude to international aid; about on-going work to restore some sense of normality in the area of China hit by the earthquake; the political mess in Zimbabwe; and all the rest of the ‘bad news’ there are some real gems which make me smile.
As I write there is the story of a saddle-back piglet on a farm in Thirsk, North Yorkshire who appears to be afraid of mud. As the piglet, called Cinders, was not playing with her brothers and sisters, the farmer and his daughter provided small Wellington boots. There are even pictures so it must be true !?!
In Australia, a drugs trial had to abandoned because jurors were playing Soduku (a numbers puzzle) because the trial was boring. The cost of the trial was one million Australian dollars. That’s not that funny, but it made me smile. My favourite - also double-edged - is the thief in London who stole a chain and bracelet and then, putting them on, admired his reflection in a CCTV camera! The police have an excellent image and I hope they catch him.
The point I am trying to make is that whilst our media peddle news of tragedy or celebrity, there is good stuff going on out there and we have to hold on to that, as a matter of hope for humankind. If God is out there, which I believe, then God is inspiring men and women, young and old, to bring hope, light and faith into a world considered by some as hopeless and dark, and where any sort of faith, certainly religious, seems to bring more violence than peace.
You may not hear of young people who have had a major impact on certain parts of Manchester by clearing litter, re-painting railings and helping local residents with their gardening. You may hear of work in Rugby, washing cars, offering tea, cakes and a listening ear, and of work in churches all over the country, offering support to the homeless, lonely and bereaved. You won't hear of the child who, hearing what Christian Aid was doing, emptied her piggy bank into a collector's envelope. You may read of local or national fundraising for good causes. You may not hear of thousands of hours offered by volunteer organisations, both church and secular.
If you do catch a morsel of
‘good news’, take a moment to reflect on what has been done, on how it makes you
feel about life, the universe and everything. For this is God at work, in small
ways, through apparently insignificant
people, whether they recognise their inspiration as divine or not.
The people asked, "When did we give you something to eat or drink? When did we welcome you as a stranger or give you clothes to wear or visit you while you were sick or in jail?"
Jesus answered, "Whenever you did it for any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me."
Matthew 25:37-40
John Anderson
Bible verses for reflection
Jesus said, “I am the light
of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of
life.”
(John
8.12)
Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd and know my sheep and am known by mine.” (John 10.14)
A parish prayer for July
Lord God our Father, grant
us to know your control throughout this day. Guard our tongues from careless and
unhelpful words; fill our minds with your truth; save us from actions which hurt
others
and ourselves; help us to please you in all that we do; for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
St
Botolph’s Restoration Appeal
Many thanks to all who have contributed to the appeal. Two recent events have added to the appeal total. We are grateful to the residents of the Robotham Close Sheltered Housing Complex for holding a coffee morning and bring and buy in aid of the appeal – the amount raised was £182.27.
We are also grateful to Andrew Higham, who ran the Rotary Shakespeare Half-Marathon in Stratford-upon-Avon in aid of the appeal and raised £615.
Many thanks to all who supported these events. The appeal now stands at a total of £9,290.
St Botolph's Church Fete
Many thanks to all who worked so hard to organise and run the Fete, and to those who came along on a very pleasant summer afternoon.
The amount raise at the fete was £1,465.
Friends of St Botolph’s
The next meeting of the proposed "Friends of St Botolph's" group will be held in St Botolph's on Thursday 19th June at 7.30 pm.
Many may be familiar with such groups which run at many other churches. Such a group allows people who are not necessarily church members but who have a particular feeling of goodwill towards a historic building within the community to support the upkeep of the building through various fundraising activities.
The meeting is open to all who might be interested in supporting such a group.
Christian Aid
The Christian Aid collection in Newbold and Long Lawford raised £1,239.13 which will go towards some very worthwhile ongoing projects.
Thanks are due to the collectors, and to everyone who contributed.
