FROM THE VICARAGE
“A new commandment I give to you - love one another, as I have loved you”. These words, recorded in St. John’s Gospel, were spoken by Jesus to His disciples as they shared the Last Supper on the eve of His crucifixion. But what was new about this commandment? Since the time of Moses hundreds of years earlier the Jews had had the Ten Commandments, which told them to love God and to love their neighbour. The new element of Jesus’ command is the rider He adds - “as I have loved you”. In His earthly life and ministry Jesus had shown His followers a new way of loving - He had shown them that the true love for others which is commanded by God is a love which is selfless, non-judgemental, understanding, forgiving, without limit and sacrificial. How much better our world would be today if we all loved one another in this way, if we all loved one another as Jesus loves us. We remember that improvement in the world begins with each of us making improvements in the way we live our lives. We remember too that in the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus redefined who our neighbour is. Our neighbour is not just the person we live next door to, or the person we work with, or the person we meet at the gym or wherever - our neighbour is anyone we meet - we may not like everyone we meet, but that does not stop us loving them as Jesus loves us - it does not stop us from wanting the very best for that person. And who knows? When we start loving others in this way, we might start to like some of the people we don’t like now! And that’s got to be good for us, for them and for the whole world.
Paul Wilkinson
A PARISH PRAYER FOR JUNE

the law. Grant that we may love you with our whole heart, and our neighbours as
ourselves; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
