Lawford Royal British Legion

Several residents got together in 1948 and decided to form a Branch of the British Legion, which was registered on 16th.April of that year.

They used to meet in various Public Houses in the village, until the Trustees of the United Charities of Sir Edward Boughton and Others agreed to sell to the British Legion, a parcel of land situated in Long Lawford - together with buildings formerly used as a Reading Room and a cottage adjoining.

A large wooden hut was also erected on the site and this was the start of the ‘Lawford Legion Club’.

On the 3rd. December 1954, three cottages adjoining the ‘Club’ were also purchased by the British Legion to allow the necessary expansion of the ‘Club’ to accommodate the increasing membership. Over the following years, re-development of the site continued, culminating in the present Club building which is a proud testament to all the hard work by various members over the years to achieve this.

The Branch holds their meetings at the Club on the second Thursday of each month, to which any ex-service person is welcome to attend. Sadly, the ex-service side of the membership is declining, which is understandable, with the age group of most of the ‘Full’ members being in the late 60’s up to the 80’s.

It must be pointed out that the Club itself is a ‘Family Club’ where children may accompany their parents to the Bingo sessions and Disco Nights etc. One does not have to be an ex-service person to become a member of the Club.
