Long Lawford Memorial Hall
History
During the 1939-45 war the people of the Village organised various events to raise money to purchase food and basic items to send to persons serving in the armed forces. When all hostilities were over there was money left in the fund so it was decided to continue raising money and use it for the benefit of the residents in the Parish.
In 1959 Mrs Foxley of Chapel Street offered the purchase of the old barns on the corner of Main Street and Railway Street. The Committee duly purchased these barns and with a lot of voluntary effort converted the barns into the Hall, which fulfilled their desire to have something of benefit for the residents.
Since the initial purpose of fund raising was for the serving members of the armed forces it was felt ideal to dedicate the Hall to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while giving that service. The Hall became the Memorial Hall and we have a plaque giving the names of all those who were killed while serving in action. We hold our service there each year on Remembrance Day, in November.
The Aims of the Hall are quoted from our constitution:
“The property hereby conveyed shall be held upon trust for the purpose of a village hall for the use of the inhabitants of Long Lawford and the neighbourhood without distinction of sex or of political, religious or other opinions, and in particular for use for meetings, lectures and classes, and for other forms of recreation and leisure-time occupation, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.”
